PM visits hi-tech HQ

19 March 2008

Gordon Brown has paid a visit to the Metropolitan Police's new special operations room at Lambeth Central Communications Command Centre.

The Prime Minister was shown around the building by Commander Simon Foy, who runs the Central Communications Command centre. Commander Foy highlighted the role that the room played in the aftermath of last year's Haymarket bombing saying that it was "the nerve centre around which we built the resassurance plan of policing London".

Known as 'GT', the new high-tech operations room is believed to be the largest of its kind and has been hailed as a huge step foward in the Metropolitan Police's capability to handle public order events and major incidents.

Mr Brown's visit came as he prepared to outline the Government's plans to deal with security threats to the UK in a National Security Strategy.
