Speaking to MPs during Prime Minister’s Questions, the PM said that proposals to keep GP clinics open after standard working hours would allow millions of people access to doctors "at the time that they want them.

The PM said:

"Our proposals are for practices to open for three more hours at weekends or in the evenings. That is a sensible proposal to deal with the concerns of millions of families who want access to their GPs at weekends or out of ordinary working hours.

"I hope that doctors will accept the proposal, which is funded by the Department of Health. That is the right way forward, so that millions of people can have access to their GPs at the time that they want them and need them."

Changes to opening hours are to come into force in April, with the NHS providing extra funding to cover the costs.
