Beckham academy - Transcript

The PM paid a visit to the David Beckham Academy in Greenwich to see children engaged in sport.

Mr Brown and David Beckham chatted with children on one of the training pitches and with others taking part in a nutrition quiz with tutors. They also looked at a mural of messages from past attendees and Mr Beckham showed the PM a wall of memorabila from his football career.

David Beckham:

Today’s a very special day for me, obviously, having the Prime Minister come down to my academy which has been open just over two years. The coaching staff and every staff member is very proud today. They’ve worked hard all year round and to have someone like the Prime Minister visit the academy and show an interest in what we’re trying to achieve and what we’re doing, not just on the football side but obviously on the nutrition side and every other aspect of the academy, it’s a very special day for us so a big thank you to the Prime Minister.

Gordon Brown:

I’ve been talking to David Beckham, who’s done an inspirational job in setting this up, about how we could extend these facilities so that children and young people in all parts of the country could benefit. They can benefit from the coaching, they can benefit from the chance to get tips about fitness, they can benefit from the media courses. And we want every child in every school in the country to get the benefit of new sports facilities and to get the benefit of the chance of doing sport. And I think David Beckham can make a huge difference in making that possible. Children are going to do five hours a week of sport at school over the next few years, from two hours to five hours. It’s going to be great as we run up to the Olympics and perhaps to the World Cup coming to England in 2018 and obviously I want to see more and more children benefiting from what is a unique offer, that to his credit, David Beckham through his charity work, is making available to so many people. This is just a great thing that is encouraging and will encourage millions more young people to be interested in sport, to get fit, and to see that they can enjoy themselves at the same time. It’s brilliant.
