Doreen Lawrence, Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust:
My name is Doreen Lawrence from the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust. I’m here this evening at Downing Street to introduce our bursary student to the Prime Minister.
Gordon Brown:
What Doreen has achieved, and it will be 15 years next year since Stephen died, is that the memory not just of Stephen’s life, but of what he would have wanted to achieve, is kept alive in the Trust and it’s kept alive in the Centre and it’s kept alive in the works of so many people who have been inspired by both what he was wanting to achieve and also by the ideas that the Trust and the Centre represent. And I’ve been so impressed also by seeing, as John Denham who’s our Minister for Universities and Skills, I should say creativity as well, he’s been so impressed with all the designs we’re seeing here and everything that has been done. I just think that what you’re achieving as a Trust, what you’re achieving as a Centre, and by the bursaries and scholarships what is being percolated now right across the world is the support, the creativity, the talent, the potential to bridge the gap between what people are and what they have it in themselves to become and that’s what the Stephen Lawrence Trust is achieving, that’s what the Centre’s achieving and that’s what your careers are going to achieve. So out of sadness and suffering, I think we can all agree that something very positive is now being achieved that will make a huge influence, not just on the life of this country but on all the international countries that are involved in this project. So to Doreen, to everybody that’s part of this, thank you very much for what you’re doing. And we stand ready to help you with what you’re doing in the future.
