General David Petraeus and US Ambassador Ryan Crocker visited Downing Street a week after the general delivered an upbeat assessment of the impact of the Pentagon’s "surge tactics" in Iraq.

The PM discussed the security situation in Iraq with General Petraeus including in Basra city; which remains stable following the handover of Basra Palace.

Mr Brown reiterated that like America, Britain will discharge its duties to the Iraqi people, its allies and to the international community.

The Prime Minister held a lengthy video conference on the issue last week with US President George Bush. The PM also said last week that UK forces will continue to help Iraqi forces "build their capabilities".

In a statement, the PM said that the UK has trained over 13,000 Iraqi soldiers in the South of the country, which meant that that Iraqi forces were able to increasingly take on responsibility for security in the region, and that the UK could hand over control of Basra Palace to the Iraqi Government.
