In his statement the PM called for the redeployment of MONUC (United Nations Mission to the DRC) troops to areas where they can be more effective and also for a boost in their overall numbers. Ongoing lobbying of the UN has already led to the better distribution of troops providing security in vacated conflict zones in the DRC and acting “as a buffer” between the fighting parties, he said.
Mr Brown said he had backed a UN resolution to channel a further 3,000 personnel to the region from contributing countries and that the UK would provide assistance in the form of technical and logistical support.
