Prime Minister:
I have just had a meeting with the Secretary General and we discussed the work that he has done in raising the concerns of the poor during this financial crisis. I also wanted to talk to him about the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about the 800,000 displaced people there. There are 17,000 peace keepers who are trying to help those people in distress. I know that the Secretary General wants there to be 3,000 more peacekeepers. I said that we would contribute to the financing of that and I know that other countries are ready to provide the manpower that is necessary. We will do everything in our power so that men, women and children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are safe and we wish there to be a political settlement of this to be agreed as soon as possible.
Mr Ban Ki Moon:
Thank you very much Mr Prime Minister for your strong support for United Nations peace keeping operations. We will continue to protect the civilian population and we will continue to [indistinct] assistance. Your support in the Security Council for additional resources for peace keepers will be greatly appreciated. and strengthen the capacity of peace keepers. And I also hope that we will closely coordinate and discuss in Washington DC tomorrow about how to address this global financial crisis. As the Secretary General of the United Nations I am concerned about the challenges of the poor people. I sincerely hope that the leaders of the G20 will address this issue while you discuss how to manage this situation.
