On 1st January 2008, in an interview with BBC4’s today programme, Chief Constable Brumstrom stated that ecstasy was statistically less dangerous than aspirin, as it had been linked to fewer deaths.  However Chief Constable Brunstrom has made it clear in his personal blog that he was not saying that he considered ecstasy to be safe but that more ecstasy related deaths are caused by people using ecstasy in an unsafe way than by ecstasy toxicity.

The Government is clear that ecstasy is a dangerous drug.  It can and does kill unpredictably.  There is no such thing as a safe dose.  The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs has previously advised that ecstasy poses very real risks of fits, seizures, mental disturbances and death.  Ecstasy is a Class A drug.  There is no intention of reviewing the classification of ecstasy because of the potential and unpredictable harm it poses to users.

As a Chief Constable, Richard Brunstrom is an employee of North Wales Police Authority. Any matters relating to his employment should be raised with them.
